My Roof Leaks Only in A Certain Wind Direction January 22nd, 2011
Finding a roof leak can be quite easy when it only leaks in a certain wind direction. The reason for this, is that you only need to investigate one side of the house (wind direction side).
No matter what type of roof you have, there will be (or should be) flashing at most junction points where the roof line meets the house, or if it’s a straight pitched roof right across the top of the house that doesn’t meet walls, you will still have ridge tiles, screws etc etc that can potentially leak.
The usual cause is wind driven rain blowing back up roof lines (more likely on a roof with a very low pitch or angle on them. In many cases you can get up there with a hose and simulate the rain direction… and force it to leak. Start at the lowest point on the roof and work your way up. Don’t rush it, otherwise you still won’t be able to tell where it came in if you hose the whole roof within 20 minutes. Just do one section at a time and give it atleast 20mins to leak through. If you can’t find it, call a leak detection company or roofer.
This method of finding a roof leak can be used on all types of roofs, including: Flat Roofs – Iron Roofs – Concrete Roofs – Terra Cotta Roofs – Decramastic Roofs – Butanol and others
